OSCE Examination

What is OSCE Exam?

The OSCE (Objective structured clinical examination) is designed to assess your ability to competently apply your professional nursing skills and knowledge in Australia. You must demonstrate that you can apply knowledge to the care of patients at the level expected of a newly registered nurse. The examination tests your ability to apply knowledge and skills to the care of patients rather than how well you can remember and recite facts.

What will I be tested on?

The OSCE comprises of 10 stations, each lasting for a stipulated time (10 minutes ie 2minutes reading time and 8 mins performance time).

When the allocated time for the station is up, you MUST move to the next station even if you may not have completed everything required for that station.

Each candidate will be tested on a series of practical skills, these may include but are not limited to:

1. Physiological observations

2. Vital signs

3. Calculating drug dosages

4. Subcutaneous/Intramuscular injection

5. Aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT)

6. In hospital resuscitation (without defibrillation)

7. Safe disposal of sharps

8. Medication administration

9. Wound care

10. Hand hygiene

11. Therapeutic patient communication/consent

12. Infection control practices

13. Patient identification and informed consent

14. Intravenous therapy administration/management

15. Risk management in the clinical environment


The OSCE examiner will assess your ability to formulate an accurate plan of care for the patient, based on your assessment findings or any information deemed relevant to the patient.

When will I get my results?

Results will be released within 6 weeks of the examination date.

What happens if I pass?

Candidates who pass the OSCE exam may now apply for to AHPRA for registration with the NMBA.

What happens if I fail?

Candidates who fail the RN-OSCE are able to retake the OSCE. If you choose to retake the OSCE you need to follow the steps as identified in the result communication, you receive to pay and register for another exam attempt.
